Spring 2010
We had a very nice crowd at our Spring Bull and Commercial Female Sale in February. The people that bought cattle and bulls hit it just right—prices of cattle have really strengthened. It is always good to have your buyers make money with their purchases.
We planted drilled TAM 90 (very shallow) and Maton cereal rye—slightly deeper than the TAM 90. We planted late and since fertilizing with chicken litter last summer, we did not fertilize again until February. We have a good stand but it’s been very late because of the cold, wet weather.
We are breeding everything two times AI before going to the bull. Many settled on first service. We are really excited about Simmental bulls in this market—50-100 pounds more at weaning looks good after this cold winter. We are now coasting with abundant forage. We will wean all our fall calves pending forage. If we get rain, we will wait later to wean—it is hard to beat 3-4 pounds a day gain with forage. I wish we could get this all year round!
The recent data out of AgriLife (A&M Extension Service at Overton) shows Tifton 85 can get up to two pounds a day gain in the summer with replacement heifers. Our results with Tifton 85 mirror theirs.
We are hoping for a wet summer again. We are gearing up for our Purebred Simmental females and Bull sale the last Saturday in October. We have AI’ed over 450 head of Simmental this year. The Brahmans are covered by Herford bulls to raise our commercial F1s that we sell in our commercial sale. We stop breeding in mid June; summer calves don’t work well for us. Call us anytime
